How LED light therapy works

LED stands for light-emitting diode. A panel emits one wavelength (color) of light at a time, and your skin absorbs it while you rest. Nothing touches your skin, and there is little or no heat.

Red light is used for signs of aging, such as fine lines and dullness. Blue light is used for oily, acne-prone skin.

LED works as a series, not a single visit. Results build gradually and are subtle.

Does LED light therapy hurt, and does it work?

01

Does it hurt?

Most people feel nothing, or mild warmth. Your eyes are covered, and you can rest throughout.

02

Does it work?

It is a gentle treatment, and results build over a series. It does not replace acne medication or deeper treatments such as peels or microneedling. Your provider explains what to expect for your skin.

03

How much does it cost?

The cost depends on whether you book it alone or with a facial, and on the number of visits you need. It is quoted at your visit.

What happens at an LED light therapy visit

  1. 1
    Cleanse

Makeup and sunscreen are removed so the light reaches clean skin.

  2. 2
    Cover your eyes

Eye shields or goggles are put on before the light is turned on.

  3. 3
    Light treatment

You rest comfortably while the panel is positioned close to your face.

  4. 4
    Aftercare

Moisturizer and sunscreen are applied. You can wear makeup right away.

LED light therapy with a facial

LED is often combined with a facial. Common pairings are blue light after a facial for breakouts and red light after a facial for dull skin.

Ask when you book whether LED can be added to your facial, HydraFacial or OxyGeneo facial. Adding it changes the cost.

Who should skip LED light therapy

LED suits most skin types. Tell your provider first if any of these apply, as LED may not be appropriate:

  • You take a medication that increases light sensitivity, such as isotretinoin or certain antibiotics.
  • You have a condition that light can aggravate, such as lupus, or an eye condition.
  • You are pregnant. Many providers postpone treatment, so ask first.
  • You have had seizures triggered by light.

I’ve been going to Magic Femtouch for a couple years and it’s honestly my favorite med spa.

…she and her staff are incredibly professional, friendly, and genuinely care about their clients.

She really is descriptive on how the process works and makes you feel comfortable throughout the whole process.

So clean and professional they’ll tell you what you need and what you don’t need.

How much does LED light therapy cost?

The cost depends on whether LED is a separate visit or added to a facial, and on the number of visits in your series. It is quoted at your visit.

Questions

LED light therapy questions

Does LED light therapy hurt?

Most people feel nothing, or mild warmth. There are no needles and no numbing, and most people return to normal activities the same day.

How many LED light therapy sessions will I need?

LED works as a series. A common plan is a visit every week or two for several weeks, then maintenance. Your provider recommends a plan for your skin.

Should I get red or blue LED light?

Red light is used for fine lines and dull skin. Blue light is used for oily, acne-prone skin. Your provider assesses your skin and selects the color, and some plans use both.

Can I add LED light therapy to a facial?

Ask when you book. LED is often done at the end of a facial. Adding it changes the cost.

Is LED light therapy safe for my eyes?

Your eyes stay covered with shields or goggles throughout, because the light is bright at close range. Tell your provider about any eye condition first.

Is a clinic LED treatment the same as a home LED mask?

They use the same principle. Clinic panels are usually stronger and cover the face evenly. A home mask can help maintain results between visits if used consistently.

What should I do after LED light therapy?

Return to normal activities. You can wear makeup right away. Wear sunscreen as usual.
